A $5 million gift from Honda R&D Americas, Inc. to The Ohio State University, matched by the College of Engineering, established the Simulation Innovation and Modeling Center in 2013.

Mission

SIMCenter researches and applies methods for virtual product development and virtual manufacturing, while spurring the creation of innovative engineering solutions using primarily physics-based modeling. Our forward-thinking, multidisciplinary teams of Ohio State students, faculty, and staff work closely with industry and agency partners to create innovative products and develop efficient processes. Research is focused broadly on mobility, energy and consumer products in topics that include:

  • solid and structural mechanics
  • computational fluid dynamics
  • systems modeling, integration and control
  • optimization and CAE automation
  • non-physics, data-driven models
  • multi-physics simulations

Projects span diverse applications such as software validation of autonomous vehicles, joining of lightweight materials in vehicle bodies, noise reduction in dishwashers and drones, and improvement of energy capture from wind turbines. SIMCenter also supports a range of educational initiatives aimed at students and working professionals to better prepare them for using simulation tools in their careers.

Given its partnerships with the College of Engineering and centers like the Aerospace Research Center, the Center for Automotive Research, and the Center for Design and Manufacturing Excellence, SIMCenter offers researchers and students the opportunity to collaborate across all phases of product and manufacturing development.

Nate Ames
SIMULATION INNOVATION AND MODELING CENTER
WELCOMES NEW INTERIM DIRECTOR NATE AMES

Nate Ames the Executive Director of the Center for Design and Manufacturing Excellence (CDME) where he oversees growth and daily operations has accepted the challenge to lead SIMCenter’s collaborative operations and services. Prior to joining CDME, Nate’s work experiences included various industry positions where he has been involved in the design and implementation of engineering solutions into commercial markets. Nate has a B.S. and M.S. in Welding Engineering from Ohio State.
