Collaborative Internship creates opportunities for students and companies

Posted:

The SIMCenter Collaborative Internship is a unique opportunity that prepares undergraduate students for simulation and modeling work. The program allows students to complete a summer internship with a company, then continue building the CAE skills they learned into the fall and spring semesters.

Selected students spend the summer completing an internship on-site with their company then transition to working at the SIMCenter during the school year. Students are paired with a mentor at the SIMCenter, where they work 10 to 20 hours per week as SIMCenter employees and complete smaller tasks for the company under the supervision of their mentor.

Any company that utilizes simulation and modeling – primarily FEA and CFD – is eligible for the internship. Students must be undergraduate engineering students, and typically complete the internship program during their third or fourth year.

For students, the Collaborative Internship exposes them to simulation and modeling and helps them become proficient in using simulation software, a skill that will set them apart from their peers. It also allows them to develop a relationship with a company and opens the door to possibly being rehired for another internship or a permanent position after graduation.

For companies, the internship program provides the opportunity to develop a relationship with a student and help that student build valuable simulation and modeling skills. The usual cost for companies is $15,000 per student, and it is recommended that each company has at least two students they sponsor through the program.
